When anxiety hides inside functioning

You can look completely in control and still live as though something is about to go wrong.

Anxiety does not always look like panic or an inability to function. Some people continue to work, lead teams, maintain relationships, travel and make difficult decisions while internally living with persistent tension, anticipation, overthinking or the sense that something is always about to go wrong.

At The Ridge, the work is led personally by British integrative psychotherapist Simon Hitchcock. The aim is not simply to create temporary relief from anxiety. It is to understand what the anxious response is doing, what it may have learned to protect against and why the same pattern continues even when part of you knows there is no immediate danger.

For some people, anxiety appears alongside burnout after years of sustained pressure. For others, earlier trauma or experiences around unpredictability, relationships, safety or control continue to influence how the nervous system responds in the present.

The Ridge offers three ways to do this work: the scheduled Five-Day Ridge Intensive, the Seven-Day Private Intensive and the 1:1 Private Weekend Intensive. The right format depends on what is happening, how much privacy is needed and how much time can realistically be given to the work.

Across all three formats, the therapeutic work takes place at The Ridge near Pizarra, Málaga. Participants stay in nearby rural accommodation approximately one kilometre away, with accommodation, all meals and agreed Málaga airport transfers included.

Why anxiety can persist

The reaction can make sense even when the danger no longer does.

Anxiety is often described as excessive worry. For many people, the experience is more complicated.

The mind scans ahead. The body remains alert. Decisions are rehearsed repeatedly. Rest creates discomfort rather than relief. Uncertainty becomes difficult to tolerate. Control starts to feel safer than trust.

These responses are not necessarily random. They may have developed because staying alert, predicting what might happen next or keeping everything under control once served an important purpose.

The difficulty comes when the same response continues long after the circumstances that created it have changed.

Someone can understand intellectually that they are safe and still find that their body behaves as though safety is temporary. That gap between what you know and what you continue to feel is one reason insight alone does not always create change.

Intensive work creates enough continuity to follow these patterns as they happen rather than repeatedly meeting them for an hour and then returning immediately to ordinary life.

High-functioning anxiety

Functioning well does not mean feeling safe.

High-functioning anxiety is a useful description for people whose anxiety may be largely invisible to everyone around them.

From the outside, they can look organised, capable, ambitious and dependable. Internally, the experience may be very different: persistent self-criticism, difficulty switching off, fear of getting something wrong, constant preparation, over-responsibility or the belief that success depends on never relaxing their grip.

For founders, executives and professionals, anxiety can become difficult to separate from performance. The same vigilance that creates exhaustion may also feel responsible for what they have achieved.

That creates an uncomfortable question: if I stop worrying, controlling or pushing, will everything I have built begin to fall apart?

For some people, this develops alongside executive burnout. The person continues performing while the internal cost becomes increasingly difficult to sustain.

The purpose of the work is not to make someone less capable. It is to understand whether anxiety has become part of the machinery keeping that capability running and what becomes possible when it no longer has to carry that role alone.

Relief from anxiety

Time away, relaxation, meditation, exercise and nervous-system regulation can create genuine relief. But if the pattern beneath the anxiety remains unchanged, the same environment can begin producing the same response again.

Intensive therapeutic work at The Ridge

Psychotherapy sits at the centre of the work at The Ridge. The focus is on understanding what keeps activating anxiety, what the response is protecting against and how that pattern appears across thought, behaviour, relationships and the body.

Three ways to work

The anxiety may be similar. The right therapeutic container may not be.

There is no single Ridge format for anxiety.

The scheduled Five-Day Ridge Intensive works with a maximum of six participants. Simon leads the therapeutic work throughout, with group integration, breathwork, equine work, wilderness, behavioural and physical elements forming part of the wider programme as standard.

The Seven-Day Private Intensive is built around one person or potentially one couple. The core work is direct therapeutic work with Simon, with specialist elements brought in where they genuinely serve the individual process rather than being automatically included.

The Private Weekend Intensive runs from Friday to Monday and is always 1:1. Therapeutic work takes place with Simon on Saturday and Sunday. It exists for people who need concentrated private work but cannot realistically step away for seven days.

Where anxiety itself makes a group setting feel inappropriate, or privacy is important for professional, personal or therapeutic reasons, one of the private formats may be more appropriate.

For people specifically researching therapeutic work without a wider participant group, there is also more detail on The Ridge’s private therapy retreat approach.

You do not need to choose a format before making contact. The first conversation with Simon is there to understand what is happening and decide what amount of time and structure can responsibly hold the work.

Further information

Common questions.

What is an anxiety therapy retreat?
: At The Ridge, it is an intensive period of psychotherapist-led therapeutic work for people whose anxiety, vigilance, worry, control or sense of threat continues to affect their life. The work is available through a scheduled Five-Day Ridge Intensive, a Seven-Day Private Intensive and a Private Weekend Intensive.
Is The Ridge an anxiety treatment centre?
: No. The Ridge is a psychotherapist-led therapeutic intensive rather than an inpatient psychiatric hospital, rehab or emergency treatment centre. Suitability is considered individually before participation is confirmed.
What is high-functioning anxiety?
: High-functioning anxiety is a commonly used description for people who experience significant anxiety while continuing to perform highly in work, relationships or other areas of life. It is not itself a formal clinical diagnosis.
Can anxiety exist even if I am still functioning normally?
: Yes. Some people continue working, leading, travelling and meeting responsibilities while internally experiencing persistent worry, tension, self-criticism, over-preparation, difficulty resting or a strong need for control.
What formats are available?
: The scheduled Five-Day Ridge Intensive runs for five continuous days with a maximum of six participants. The Seven-Day Private Intensive is arranged for one person or potentially one couple. The Private Weekend Intensive runs from Friday to Monday and is always 1:1.
Which format is best for anxiety?
: There is no single correct format. The appropriate route depends on what is happening, whether a group setting is suitable, how much privacy is needed and how much time can realistically be given to the work. Simon discusses this with every prospective participant before anything is arranged.
Who leads the therapeutic work?
: Simon Hitchcock, a British integrative psychotherapist with more than fifteen years of clinical experience, leads the therapeutic work personally across all Ridge formats.
Where does the work take place?
: The therapeutic work takes place at The Ridge near Pizarra in Málaga, Andalusia. Participants stay in nearby rural accommodation approximately one kilometre away.
What is included?
: Accommodation, all meals and agreed Málaga airport transfers are included across all three formats. The scheduled Five-Day Ridge Intensive also includes the wider specialist programme, written leaving document and ninety days of direct follow-up.
Can anxiety be connected to trauma or burnout?
: It can be. For some people anxiety develops alongside sustained pressure or burnout. For others, earlier experiences may continue to influence threat, control, relationships, vigilance or how safe it feels to relax. The relevant pattern is explored individually rather than assumed from a label.
Is The Ridge suitable for severe anxiety or someone in crisis?
: Suitability depends on the individual circumstances and is discussed directly with Simon before participation. The Ridge is not an emergency or acute psychiatric service. Anyone in immediate crisis or requiring medically supervised support should access appropriate local or specialist services first.
Anxiety · Intensive therapeutic work

You do not have to wait until anxiety stops you functioning.

Some people ask for help only once anxiety has made ordinary life impossible.

Others reach the point earlier. They can still work, perform and appear capable, but know how much effort it now takes to maintain that version of their life.

Whether the right amount of time is five days, seven days or a private weekend is something Simon can establish with you before anything is arranged.
