When time away is not enough

Sometimes what you need is not simply rest. It is enough time to understand what keeps repeating.

People search for a mental health retreat for very different reasons.

Some are exhausted after years of sustained pressure. Some are living with persistent anxiety while continuing to function at a high level. Others know that earlier experiences, relationships or long-established ways of coping are still shaping how they feel and behave now.

The phrase mental health retreat can describe everything from a wellness break to residential psychiatric treatment. The Ridge is more specific.

The work is led personally by British integrative psychotherapist Simon Hitchcock and is built around intensive psychotherapy rather than relaxation, coaching or a general programme of wellbeing activities.

There are three ways to work at The Ridge: the scheduled Five-Day Ridge Intensive, the Seven-Day Private Intensive and the 1:1 Private Weekend Intensive. The right format depends on what is happening, whether a wider group is appropriate, how much privacy is needed and how much time can realistically be given to the work.

The therapeutic work takes place at The Ridge near Pizarra, Málaga. Across all three formats, participants stay in nearby rural accommodation approximately one kilometre away, with accommodation, all meals and agreed Málaga airport transfers included.

The Ridge is not an inpatient psychiatric hospital, rehab or emergency mental health service. Every person speaks privately with Simon before participation is confirmed so that suitability can be considered properly.

A different kind of retreat

The change of environment matters. What happens inside it matters more.

Getting away from ordinary life can create relief. Pressure reduces. Responsibilities become quieter. There is more space to think, sleep and notice what has been difficult to notice while continuing to function.

But changing the environment does not automatically change the pattern.

The same anxiety can return. The same relationship dynamics can reappear. The same need for control, achievement, withdrawal or self-protection can begin operating again once ordinary life resumes.

At The Ridge, psychotherapy is the centre of the work.

Intensive therapeutic work creates a different kind of continuity from occasional conversations spread across weeks or months. It allows Simon to stay with what emerges, notice how patterns appear in real time and work with what sits beneath the presenting problem rather than repeatedly beginning and ending around the same material.

This does not mean every person comes with the same issue or receives the same process. Someone experiencing burnout may need something very different from someone living with persistent anxiety or dealing with the continuing effects of earlier experiences.

The structure is there to create enough time and continuity for the work to become specific to the person.

For more about how this differs from conventional retreat formats, there is a dedicated explanation of the intensive therapy approach at The Ridge.

Explore the Ways to Work
Before crisis

You do not have to stop functioning before something deserves attention.

Mental health difficulty does not always arrive as a visible breakdown.

A person can continue working, making decisions, caring for other people and meeting every responsibility expected of them while privately knowing that something has changed.

Sleep becomes less restorative. Anxiety becomes harder to switch off. Relationships start receiving whatever energy remains. Work continues, but the satisfaction attached to it diminishes. Control, withdrawal, overthinking or constant activity can become ways of keeping more difficult feelings at a manageable distance.

For some people, this appears as high-functioning anxiety. For others, sustained responsibility and pressure develop into burnout or executive burnout. And sometimes what is happening in the present is connected to earlier experiences that continue to influence relationships, safety, trust or the way pressure is experienced now.

The Ridge is not built around waiting for somebody to deteriorate far enough to justify asking for help. The question is whether something important has become repetitive, costly or increasingly difficult to change within ordinary life.

Intensive therapeutic work creates time to understand that pattern before the person’s ability to function becomes the only measure of whether they are struggling.

A Wellness or Restorative Retreat

A wellness retreat may centre on rest, movement, yoga, meditation, nutrition, spa treatments or simply stepping away from ordinary pressure. Those experiences can be valuable, particularly when restoration is what is needed.

The Ridge Intensive

Psychotherapy sits at the centre. The purpose is not simply to feel better while away, but to spend concentrated time understanding the patterns shaping how a person responds to pressure, relationships, anxiety, responsibility, safety and themselves.

Mental health is the umbrella. The work begins with what is actually happening.

Different reasons for coming

Mental health is the umbrella. The work begins with what is actually happening.

There is no single experience called a mental health problem, and The Ridge does not reduce people to a diagnostic label.

Someone may arrive because persistent anxiety has made it difficult to switch off even though they continue functioning successfully. Another person may have reached burnout after years of carrying pressure and responsibility without allowing anything to give.

For founders, executives and professionals, those two patterns can overlap. High performance continues while anxiety, exhaustion, control or emotional disconnection become increasingly difficult to contain privately. There is more specific information about executive burnout and intensive therapeutic work at The Ridge.

For someone else, the present problem may make more sense in the context of earlier experiences. Patterns around safety, relationships, vigilance, withdrawal, trust or self-protection can continue long after the original circumstances have changed.

These are different starting points. They are not interchangeable search terms and they do not automatically require the same kind of work.

The scheduled Five-Day Ridge Intensive offers five continuous days with a maximum of six participants and the wider Ridge specialist programme included as standard.

The Seven-Day Private Intensive is centred on one person or potentially one couple and allows the structure to be shaped much more closely around what is happening.

The Private Weekend Intensive is always 1:1 and provides concentrated work with Simon from Friday to Monday for someone who needs privacy but cannot realistically step away for seven days.

Where privacy itself is central to the search, there is more detail about The Ridge’s private therapy retreat approach.

You do not need to diagnose yourself or choose a programme before making contact. The first conversation with Simon is there to understand what is happening, whether The Ridge is appropriate and which format can responsibly hold the work.

Further information

Common questions.

What is a mental health retreat?
: The term can describe many different kinds of experience. At The Ridge, it means psychotherapist-led intensive therapeutic work in Andalusia for people who need more time and continuity than a conventional retreat environment provides. The Ridge offers a scheduled Five-Day Intensive, a Seven-Day Private Intensive and a Private Weekend Intensive.
Is The Ridge a mental health clinic or psychiatric hospital?
: No. The Ridge is not an inpatient psychiatric hospital, medical facility, rehab or emergency mental health service. It provides psychotherapist-led intensive therapeutic work for people whose circumstances are appropriate for this kind of setting. Suitability is discussed privately with Simon before participation is confirmed.
Do I need a mental health diagnosis to come to The Ridge?
: No. People may seek intensive therapeutic work because something in their life has become difficult, repetitive or unsustainable without necessarily identifying with a particular diagnosis. Suitability is considered individually rather than determined from a label alone.
What kinds of problems bring people to The Ridge?
: People may be dealing with persistent anxiety, burnout, executive burnout, the continuing effects of earlier experiences, relationship patterns, difficulty switching off, emotional disconnection or ways of coping that no longer work as they once did. What is relevant is explored individually with Simon.
What formats are available?
: The scheduled Five-Day Ridge Intensive runs for five continuous days with a maximum of six participants. The Seven-Day Private Intensive is arranged for one person or potentially one couple. The Private Weekend Intensive runs from Friday to Monday and is always 1:1.
Which Ridge format is right for me?
: There is no single correct format. The appropriate route depends on what is happening, whether a group setting is suitable, how much privacy is needed and how much time can realistically be given to the work. Simon discusses this with every prospective participant before anything is arranged.
Who leads the therapeutic work?
: Simon Hitchcock, a British integrative psychotherapist with more than fifteen years of clinical experience, leads the therapeutic work personally across all three Ridge formats.
Where does the retreat take place?
: The therapeutic work takes place at The Ridge near Pizarra in Málaga, Andalusia, Spain. Participants stay in nearby rural accommodation approximately one kilometre away.

Is private mental health support available at The Ridge?
: Yes. The Seven-Day Private Intensive is centred on one person or potentially one couple. The Private Weekend Intensive is always 1:1. Both are arranged privately with Simon and specialist elements can be added where they genuinely serve the work.
Is The Ridge suitable for someone in a mental health crisis?
: No. The Ridge is not an emergency, crisis or acute psychiatric service. Anyone in immediate danger, experiencing an acute psychiatric crisis or requiring medically supervised care should use appropriate emergency or specialist services. Simon considers suitability before any Ridge intensive is confirmed.

You do not need to wait until life becomes unmanageable.

Some people reach for help when they can no longer function.

Others reach the point earlier. Work still happens. Responsibilities are still met. Life may look intact from the outside, but the effort required to hold it together has become increasingly difficult to ignore.

The first conversation is not about fitting you into a diagnosis or selling you a programme. It is a private conversation with Simon about what is happening, whether The Ridge is the right place to work with it and what amount of time and structure makes sense.
