When nothing feels quite like it used to

Life can keep working even when you stop feeling fully inside it.

Emotional numbness does not always look dramatic.

You may still work, make decisions, maintain relationships, travel, socialise and carry responsibility. Life continues to function. From the outside, very little may appear to have changed.

Internally, the experience can be very different.

Things that once mattered create less feeling. Achievement lands briefly or not at all. Relationships can feel more distant. You may know intellectually that you care about people without being able to access the feeling you expect to be there. Pleasure becomes muted. Sadness may feel equally difficult to reach.

Some people describe it as numbness. Others talk about emotional flatness, shutdown, disconnection or simply feeling unlike themselves.

At The Ridge, the question is not how to force somebody to feel more. It is what may have made feeling less necessary, useful or unavoidable in the first place.

The work is led personally by British integrative psychotherapist Simon Hitchcock and is available through three formats: the scheduled Five-Day Ridge Intensive, the Seven-Day Private Intensive and the 1:1 Private Weekend Intensive.

The therapeutic work takes place at The Ridge near Pizarra, Málaga. Across all three formats, participants stay in nearby rural accommodation approximately one kilometre away, with accommodation, all meals and agreed Málaga airport transfers included.

Why numbness can make sense

Sometimes not feeling becomes part of how a person keeps functioning.

Emotional numbness is not one thing and it does not have one cause.

For some people, it appears after a prolonged period of pressure or overwhelm. For others, emotional shutdown becomes familiar much earlier, particularly where difficult feelings, conflict, uncertainty or vulnerability once felt hard to manage safely.

Sometimes the person has become extremely good at functioning through thought, responsibility and action.

There is always something to do. Something to organise. Somebody who needs something. Another decision to make. Another goal to reach.

Activity can keep life moving while creating very little space to notice what is happening underneath it.

Over time, the distance between functioning and feeling can become increasingly difficult to ignore.

This is one reason emotional numbness can overlap with burnout, anxiety or the continuing influence of earlier experiences without being identical to any of them.

At The Ridge, intensive therapeutic work creates enough continuity to notice how that disconnection operates rather than assuming in advance what caused it.

The aim is not emotional intensity for its own sake. It is to understand what has become difficult to feel, what happens when emotion begins to appear and what the existing distance from it may have been doing for the person.

For more about the therapeutic structure itself, there is a dedicated explanation of the intensive therapy approach at The Ridge.

Explore the Ways to Work
Still functioning

Emotional disconnection can hide inside a very capable life.

People often expect serious emotional difficulty to make functioning impossible.

It does not always work that way.

Someone can lead a company, care for a family, maintain friendships, exercise, travel and meet every practical responsibility while privately feeling increasingly absent from their own experience.

In fact, capability can help conceal the problem.

Doing becomes easier than feeling. Responsibility provides structure. Achievement creates another reason to keep moving. Other people continue seeing the person they have always known, even when that person feels increasingly distant from themselves.

For founders, executives and professionals, this can overlap with executive burnout. The person remains effective, but success becomes less emotionally rewarding and stopping can feel more uncomfortable than continuing.

For others, emotional distance becomes most obvious in relationships. A partner may experience somebody as withdrawn, unavailable or difficult to reach while the person themselves struggles to explain what has changed.

None of this tells us automatically why the numbness exists.

The purpose of therapy is not to impose an explanation. It is to become curious about the pattern itself: when feeling disappears, what makes it return, which emotions are easier or harder to access, what happens around closeness and conflict, and what the person fears might happen if they stopped holding themselves at the same distance.

A Reset or Reconnection Retreat

Time away, rest, movement, meditation or a change of environment may create valuable space and temporary reconnection. But feeling different while away does not necessarily explain why emotional distance developed or what happens when ordinary life resumes.

The Ridge Intensive

Psychotherapy sits at the centre. The work explores how emotional distance operates in the individual person, what may sit beneath it and how the same pattern appears through relationships, pressure, control, vulnerability and the way a person relates to themselves.

What sits beneath the distance

Two people can describe themselves as emotionally numb and mean completely different things.

One may have spent years under relentless pressure until almost everything outside immediate responsibility began to feel muted.

Another may notice that anxiety disappears only when feeling disappears with it.

Someone else may recognise that emotional distance becomes strongest around intimacy, disagreement, vulnerability or situations that echo something learned much earlier in life.

This is why The Ridge does not assume that emotional numbness automatically means trauma, burnout, depression or any other diagnosis.

The work begins with the person rather than the label.

For some people, the wider picture is persistent anxiety. For others it is burnout or executive burnout. Earlier experiences may be important for somebody else. And where emotional disconnection has become most visible within a relationship, intensive couples work may be the more relevant route.

The scheduled Five-Day Ridge Intensive provides five continuous days with a maximum of six participants and the wider Ridge specialist programme included as standard.

The Seven-Day Private Intensive provides a private structure centred on one person or potentially one couple, while the Private Weekend Intensive provides concentrated 1:1 work with Simon from Friday to Monday.

Where privacy itself is central to the search, there is more detail on The Ridge’s private therapy retreat approach.

Further information

Common questions.

What is emotional numbness?
: Emotional numbness is a term people often use when emotions feel muted, distant or difficult to access. Someone may feel disconnected from themselves, other people or experiences that would previously have created a stronger emotional response. It is a description of an experience rather than a diagnosis by itself.
Why do I feel emotionally numb even though my life is going well?
: Emotional difficulty does not always prevent somebody from functioning. Some people continue working, maintaining relationships and carrying significant responsibility while feeling increasingly disconnected internally. Understanding why that is happening requires looking at the individual person rather than assuming that outward success means everything feels well.
Is emotional numbness caused by trauma?
: It can be associated with earlier difficult experiences for some people, but emotional numbness does not automatically mean trauma. Prolonged stress, burnout, anxiety, relationship patterns and other psychological or physical factors can also be relevant. The Ridge does not assume a cause from the symptom alone.
Can burnout make you feel emotionally numb?
: Some people experiencing prolonged burnout describe emotional flatness, reduced enjoyment, disconnection or the sense that they are continuing to function without feeling fully engaged in their life. Burnout is one possible part of the picture rather than an automatic explanation for every person.
Can anxiety and emotional numbness happen together?
: Yes. Some people experience periods of anxiety, vigilance or overthinking alongside periods of shutdown or emotional distance. The relationship between those responses differs from person to person and can be explored therapeutically.
Is emotional numbness the same as dissociation?
: Not necessarily. Emotional numbness is a broad description of feeling emotionally flat or disconnected. Dissociation can refer to more specific experiences involving disconnection from thoughts, feelings, identity, the body or surroundings. The Ridge does not use emotional numbness alone to diagnose dissociation.
What formats are available at The Ridge?
: The scheduled Five-Day Ridge Intensive runs for five continuous days with a maximum of six participants. The Seven-Day Private Intensive is arranged for one person or potentially one couple. The Private Weekend Intensive runs from Friday to Monday and is always 1:1.
Which format is best if I feel emotionally numb or disconnected?
: There is no single correct format. The appropriate structure depends on what is happening, whether a wider group is suitable, how much privacy is needed and how much time can realistically be given to the work. Simon discusses this before anything is arranged.
Who leads the therapeutic work?
: Simon Hitchcock, a British integrative psychotherapist with more than fifteen years of clinical experience, leads the therapeutic work personally across all three Ridge formats.
Where does the work take place?
: The therapeutic work takes place at The Ridge near Pizarra in Málaga, Andalusia, Spain. Participants stay in nearby rural accommodation approximately one kilometre away.
What is included?
: Accommodation, all meals and agreed Málaga airport transfers are included across all three Ridge formats. The scheduled Five-Day Ridge Intensive also includes the wider specialist programme, written leaving document and ninety days of direct follow-up.
Is The Ridge suitable if I am in a mental health crisis?
: No. The Ridge is not an emergency, crisis or acute psychiatric service. Anyone in immediate danger or requiring urgent or medically supervised support should access appropriate emergency or specialist services. Simon considers suitability before any Ridge intensive is confirmed.
Emotional numbness · Intensive therapeutic work

Feeling less does not mean there is less to understand.

Sometimes emotional numbness becomes noticeable because something dramatic has happened.

Sometimes nothing obvious has happened at all.

Life continues. Responsibilities are met. Other people may not realise anything is wrong. The only clear signal is that you feel increasingly distant from the person living it.

You do not need to know why before making contact.

The first conversation with Simon is there to understand what you are experiencing, whether The Ridge is the right place to work with it and which therapeutic format makes sense.
