When the relationship needs more room

Some patterns are difficult to understand while you are still living inside them.

Couples do not only seek therapy when a relationship is ending.

Sometimes both people still care deeply about what they have built together, but the same arguments keep returning. Communication becomes defensive. Distance grows. One person pursues while the other withdraws. Resentment accumulates beneath practical life, or the relationship becomes highly functional while emotional connection becomes increasingly difficult to reach.

Weekly couples therapy can create valuable space for this work. But for some couples, an hour at a time is not enough to stay with what becomes visible before work, family, travel and ordinary responsibilities take over again.

At The Ridge, couples work is available through the Seven-Day Private Intensive. One couple works privately with British integrative psychotherapist Simon Hitchcock, with no wider participant group and with the structure shaped around what is happening in that particular relationship.

The purpose is not to manufacture closeness or persuade two people to remain together. It is to create enough time, privacy and therapeutic continuity to understand what is happening between them, what each person brings into the pattern and what needs to change for the relationship to move differently.

The work takes place at The Ridge near Pizarra, Málaga. The couple stays in nearby rural accommodation approximately one kilometre away, with accommodation, all meals and agreed Málaga airport transfers included.

Why intensive couples work

The argument is rarely the whole problem.

Couples often become extremely familiar with the subject of their disagreements.

Money. Work. Sex. Parenting. Family. Attention. Trust. Time. Responsibility. Who does more. Who listens less.

But knowing what you argue about does not necessarily explain why the same interaction keeps repeating.

One person may become increasingly demanding because distance feels threatening. The other may retreat because conflict feels overwhelming. Attempts to create closeness can then produce more withdrawal, which creates more pursuit, until both people are responding to the pattern rather than to each other.

Other relationships organise themselves around control, avoidance, criticism, self-protection, over-responsibility or the belief that difficult subjects are safer left untouched.

What appears to be a communication problem can therefore involve much more than finding better words.

Intensive couples therapy creates time to slow the pattern down, understand what happens inside each person when it begins and work with the relationship while the process remains present rather than postponing it until another weekly session.

At The Ridge, the work is centred on direct psychotherapy with Simon across a private seven-day structure.

For more about why therapeutic continuity can work differently from isolated sessions, there is also an explanation of the intensive therapy approach at The Ridge.

Two people. One relationship.

Couples work is not about deciding which person is the problem.

When a relationship has been under pressure for long enough, each person usually develops a clear account of what the other is doing wrong.

Those accounts may contain truth. But if the work stops there, therapy can easily become another place in which the existing argument is repeated.

A relationship is also a system between two people.

Each person arrives with their own history, expectations, fears, protective responses and ideas about what closeness, conflict, safety and responsibility are supposed to mean. Under pressure, those individual patterns begin interacting with each other.

Someone who fears abandonment may respond to distance by seeking more reassurance. Someone who experiences emotional intensity as threatening may respond by withdrawing. Both reactions then confirm what the other person already fears.

The purpose of couples work at The Ridge is not to flatten those differences or allocate blame.

It is to understand what is happening between two people clearly enough that each person can recognise their own part in the pattern, encounter the other more accurately and make more conscious decisions about what happens next.

For some couples, this creates a route back towards one another. For others, the work may create clarity about difficult realities that have been avoided.

The outcome is not predetermined.

A Couples Reconnection Retreat

Some couples retreats centre on time together, relaxation, intimacy exercises, wellness activities or stepping away from everyday responsibilities. Those experiences may create useful space and renewed connection.

Couples Work at The Ridge

Psychotherapy sits at the centre. The focus is not on creating a romantic experience or temporary closeness, but on understanding the relationship pattern, what each person contributes to it and what becomes possible when both can encounter it differently.

When couples come

You do not need to wait until the relationship is beyond repair.

Some couples arrive at intensive therapy because the relationship is in obvious difficulty.

Others arrive much earlier.

They may still function extremely well together. They run a home, raise children, manage careers, travel, socialise and make decisions as a team. From the outside, very little appears wrong.

But intimacy has changed. Conversations remain practical. Difficult subjects are postponed. Affection becomes less spontaneous. One or both people feel increasingly alone inside a relationship that still works perfectly well on paper.

Pressure elsewhere can contribute to this. Burnout, persistent anxiety, professional responsibility and unresolved experiences from earlier life do not remain neatly contained inside one person. They can change how available someone is emotionally, how conflict is experienced and what happens when another person asks for closeness.

This is one reason couples work sometimes involves understanding the individual person as well as the relationship between them.

At The Ridge, a couples intensive is held through the Seven-Day Private Intensive. The couple works directly with Simon, privately and without a wider participant group, with additional specialist elements considered only where they genuinely serve the work.

Where the difficulty is primarily individual rather than relational, The Ridge also offers private therapeutic work for one person. That distinction is part of the initial conversation rather than something a couple needs to determine alone before making contact.

The first conversation is there to understand what is happening, hear enough from both people to consider suitability and establish whether seven days of private intensive couples work is the right therapeutic container.

The first conversation does not decide the future of your relationship.

It begins with understanding what is happening between you.

You do not need to arrive with the same explanation, agree about who is responsible or already know whether seven days together is the right answer.

The first step is a private conversation with Simon about the relationship, what has brought you to this point and whether The Ridge is an appropriate place to do the work.
