When life keeps moving but something in you does not

Depression does not always look like being unable to function.

Some people experiencing depression stop being able to work, socialise or manage ordinary life.

Others continue.

They go to work. Make decisions. Care for other people. Travel. Exercise. Answer messages. Meet deadlines. From the outside, their life may still appear largely intact.

What changes is how it feels to be inside it.

Things that once created pleasure begin to land differently. Motivation becomes harder to access. Relationships can feel more distant. Ordinary decisions require more effort. The future becomes difficult to imagine with the same sense of possibility.

At The Ridge, depression is not treated as a single story with a single cause. The work begins with the person: what has changed, what else is happening around the low mood, what patterns have developed alongside it and what may be keeping the person where they are.

The therapeutic work is led personally by British integrative psychotherapist Simon Hitchcock and is available through three formats: the scheduled Five-Day Ridge Intensive, the Seven-Day Private Intensive and the 1:1 Private Weekend Intensive.

The work takes place at The Ridge near Pizarra, Málaga. Across all three formats, participants stay in nearby rural accommodation approximately one kilometre away, with accommodation, all meals and agreed Málaga airport transfers included.

The Ridge is not an inpatient psychiatric hospital, medical treatment centre or emergency mental health service. Suitability is considered individually with Simon before any intensive is confirmed.

Beyond simply feeling low

Depression can affect far more than mood.

Depression can be experienced in very different ways.

For one person, sadness is obvious. For another, the stronger experience is exhaustion, irritability, withdrawal or the sense that everything requires more effort than it should.

Someone else may describe very little feeling at all.

Pleasure disappears. Relationships become harder to reach emotionally. Achievement stops creating satisfaction. Things continue to happen, but the person feels increasingly detached from them.

This is one reason depression can overlap with emotional numbness, burnout, anxiety or the continuing influence of earlier experiences without being identical to any of them.

The label tells us something. It does not tell us everything.

At The Ridge, intensive therapeutic work provides more continuity than isolated conversations separated by ordinary life. It creates time to understand what happens around the low mood, what appears to deepen it, what changes it and how the person has learned to respond to difficult feeling, pressure, relationships and themselves.

The purpose is not to force somebody into positivity.

It is to understand more clearly what is happening and what may need to change for life to begin feeling different rather than simply looking functional again.

For more about the structure itself, there is a dedicated explanation of the intensive therapy approach at The Ridge.

Explore the Ways to Work
Still functioning

Capability can hide how difficult life has become.

People often judge the seriousness of depression by how much somebody can still do.

That can be misleading.

A person may continue to perform extremely well while privately experiencing very little pleasure, motivation or connection to what they are doing.

Routine can help keep everything moving. Work creates structure. Responsibility creates necessity. Other people still depend on you, so you continue showing up.

Sometimes that functioning is protective.

It can also make it easier to postpone asking what is actually happening.

For founders, executives and professionals, the boundary between depression and burnout can become particularly difficult to understand from the inside. Exhaustion, emotional flatness, reduced satisfaction and withdrawal can sit alongside continued performance.

For somebody else, persistent anxiety may be part of the same picture. Another person may notice that the dominant experience is emotional numbness rather than sadness.

These distinctions matter because the work should not be organised around whichever label appears first in a search box.

The purpose is to understand the individual experience properly enough to work with what is actually happening.

A Restorative or Wellness Retreat

Rest, exercise, nutrition, sunshine, movement and a temporary reduction in responsibility can all affect how somebody feels. Those things may be valuable, particularly when exhaustion and prolonged pressure are part of the picture.

The Ridge Intensive

Psychotherapy sits at the centre. The work is concerned with what is happening psychologically as well as the environment around the person: the patterns, relationships, experiences, pressures and ways of coping that may be contributing to why life has become increasingly difficult to inhabit.

The diagnosis may describe the experience. It does not explain the whole person.

What sits around the depression

The diagnosis may describe the experience. It does not explain the whole person.

Two people can both describe themselves as depressed and arrive at that experience through very different circumstances.

One person may have spent years under sustained pressure until exhaustion and loss of enjoyment became increasingly difficult to separate.

Another may live with constant anxiety, self-criticism or the sense that something is always about to go wrong.

Someone else may recognise that the present difficulty is connected to earlier experiences, relationships or ways of protecting themselves that once made sense and now seem to organise much of their life.

For others, emotional numbness or disconnection is more recognisable than sadness itself.

The Ridge does not assume that one of those explanations is automatically the right one.

The scheduled Five-Day Ridge Intensive provides five continuous days with a maximum of six participants and the wider specialist programme included as standard.

The Seven-Day Private Intensive provides a private structure centred on one person or potentially one couple, while the Private Weekend Intensive provides concentrated 1:1 work with Simon from Friday to Monday.

Where privacy itself is important, there is more detail on The Ridge’s private therapy retreat approach.

And where depression forms part of a broader mental health picture rather than being the only presenting difficulty, there is an overview of The Ridge as a mental health retreat in Spain.

You do not need to establish exactly why you feel the way you do before making contact. The first conversation with Simon is there to understand what is happening, consider whether The Ridge is appropriate and establish which therapeutic format can responsibly hold the work.

Further information

Common questions.

What is a depression retreat?
: At The Ridge, a depression retreat means psychotherapist-led intensive therapeutic work in Andalusia for somebody experiencing depression, persistent low mood, loss of interest or related difficulties where this type of setting is appropriate. The work is available through a scheduled Five-Day Ridge Intensive, a Seven-Day Private Intensive and a Private Weekend Intensive.
Is The Ridge a depression treatment centre?
: No. The Ridge is not an inpatient psychiatric hospital, medical treatment centre, rehab or emergency mental health service. It provides psychotherapist-led intensive therapeutic work for people whose circumstances are appropriate for this kind of setting. Suitability is considered with Simon before anything is confirmed.
Do I need a formal diagnosis of depression?
: No. Some people arrive with an existing diagnosis while others simply know that their mood, motivation, interest or relationship with life has changed. The work begins with understanding the individual person rather than requiring a particular diagnostic label.
Can someone be depressed and still function normally?
: Yes. Some people experiencing depression continue working, maintaining relationships and meeting significant responsibilities. Outward functioning does not necessarily show how somebody feels internally or how much effort ordinary life is requiring.
Is depression the same as burnout?
: No. They can share experiences such as exhaustion, reduced motivation or loss of enjoyment, but they are not the same thing. For some people both may be relevant. Understanding the individual circumstances is more useful than assuming one label explains everything.
Is depression the same as emotional numbness?
: No. Emotional numbness describes feeling emotionally flat, distant or disconnected and can occur in different psychological contexts. Some people experiencing depression also describe numbness, but the two terms are not interchangeable.
Can anxiety and depression happen together?
: They can. Some people experience persistent anxiety, vigilance or overthinking alongside low mood, reduced motivation or loss of interest. How those experiences relate to each other varies from person to person.
What formats are available at The Ridge?
: The scheduled Five-Day Ridge Intensive runs for five continuous days with a maximum of six participants. The Seven-Day Private Intensive is arranged for one person or potentially one couple. The Private Weekend Intensive runs from Friday to Monday and is always 1:1.
Which format is right if depression is the main problem?
: There is no single correct format. The appropriate structure depends on what is happening, whether a wider group is suitable, how much privacy is needed and how much time can realistically be given to the work. Simon discusses this before anything is arranged.
Who leads the therapeutic work?
: Simon Hitchcock, a British integrative psychotherapist with more than fifteen years of clinical experience, leads the therapeutic work personally across all three Ridge formats.
Where does the work take place?
: The therapeutic work takes place at The Ridge near Pizarra in Málaga, Andalusia, Spain. Participants stay in nearby rural accommodation approximately one kilometre away.
What is included?
: Accommodation, all meals and agreed Málaga airport transfers are included across all three Ridge formats. The scheduled Five-Day Ridge Intensive also includes the wider specialist programme, written leaving document and ninety days of direct follow-up.
Is The Ridge suitable for someone experiencing a mental health crisis or at immediate risk of harm?
: No. The Ridge is not an emergency or acute psychiatric service. Anyone in immediate danger, experiencing an acute mental health crisis or requiring medically supervised care should use appropriate emergency or specialist services. Simon considers suitability before any Ridge intensive is confirmed.
Depression · Intensive therapeutic work

You do not need to wait until you can no longer function.

Sometimes depression becomes impossible to ignore because ordinary life stops working.

Sometimes it is quieter.

Life continues, but it becomes increasingly difficult to feel engaged with it. Things still happen, responsibilities are still met and other people may not realise how different everything feels from the inside.

You do not need to arrive knowing exactly why.

The first conversation with Simon is there to understand what you are experiencing, whether The Ridge is the right place to work with it and what amount of time and structure makes sense.
